Welcome back after a fun and safe winter break! We are excited to start a new term with lots of things to learn and do.
Math: We are learning about fractions. By the end of this unit your child will be able to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, find equivalent fractions, and compare and order fractions.
Reading: This week we are learning how to determine the theme and the author's message in a book. We will continue to use this reading strategy throughout the month. Your students just finished reading books related to Martin Luther King Jr. Day and have learned a little about the underground railroad, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement.
Writing: We are working on creating how-to books. This month we are focusing on clear and detailed writing as well as transition words.
Science: Your children are carrying out controlled experiments in the classroom. They are observing their two plants every day. Ask them about what they did!
Health/Social Studies: We have been learning how to be media-smart! Your students can analyze advertisements and think about what the advertisers are really trying to say and get you to think. We are also learning about service in Utah. Your students will be working on a service project in the next few weeks where they will be researching a need in Utah and creating an advertisement to encourage others to help with the need.
Spelling: Your child should be bringing home a spelling list in the back of their homework journal every day. We teach the sort on Monday, practice throughout the week, and have the test on Friday.
I will be posting helpful links and important dates on our class district website at http://my.uen.org/myuen/234638 .
We are looking forward to a great term! Thank you for all you do.
